Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of the exposure of recurrent laryngeal nerve on avoiding nerve injury during thyroid operation. Methods 416 patients with thyroid diseases who were performed the surgical treatment were analyzed retrospectively,in which 290 cases who were operated through exposing the recurrent laryngeal nerve were regarded as exposing group, and the rest were regarded as the group without exposure. The recurrent laryngeal nerve injury after operation was analyzed postoperatively. Results The transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury occurred only in one case of the exposing group(0.69%).Three cases of transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and one case of permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury were found in the group without exposure in which the total injury ratio was 3.97%.The recurrent laryngeal nerve injury ratio in the exposing group decreased significantly(P0.05).Conclusion Exposing recurrent laryngeal nerve during routine thyroid operation can reduce the recurrent laryngeal nerve injury effectively.
