Abstract

Objective To explore the causes and preventive measures of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in thyroid surgery. Methods The clinical data of 274 cases(January 2002 to December 2011) of thyroid surgery were retrospectively reviewed, using recurrent laryngeal nerve exposure and protection technology during operation. Results There were 14 cases of temporary damage of recurrent laryngeal nerve and 1 case of permanent damage.Damage rate was 5.5%.Conclusion The measures, such as familiar with recurrent laryngeal nerve normal anatomy and the variation characteristics, choosing the right operation, effective exposure and nerve protection, precise operation, can effectively reduce the incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.
