Abstract
AIM To explore the effects of losartan on pulse pressure and endothelial function in patients with essential hypertension (EH). METHODS A total of 56 hypertensive patients were divided into two groups: PP≥60 mmHg group (n=27) and PP60 mmHg group (n=29). Patients in both groups were treated with losartan 50-100 mg once daily for 24 weeks. The brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was measured with the high-resolution ultrasonography to assess the endothelial function. Differences of PP and endothelial function between the two groups were measured before and after treatment. RESULTS FMD of patients in PP≥60 mmHg group was lower than that in PP60 mmHg group (P0.05). FMD and PP of patients in both groups were significantly improved after treatment (P0.05), but FMD and PP in PP≥60 mmHg group were improved more significantly compared with those in PP60 mmHg group (P0.05). CONCLUSION Losartan decreases PP and improves endothelial dysfunction in patients with EH. Patients with greater PP may benefit more from losartan treatment.
