Abstract

The encoding principles of convolutional codes and Turbo codes, which are developed from convolutional ones, are analyzed. The structure characteristics of these two encoding methods,as well as the decoding algorithm of Maximum A Posteriori(MAP) probability are demonstrated. The resulting Bit Error Rate(BER) curves are plotted respectively, from the simulations on both codes. From the simulation results of both encoding method,it may be observed obviously that the performance of turbo code decoding and encoding is superior to the one of traditional convolutional code system. It is concluded that turbo codes with as many numbers of iterations as possible have specific advantages over convolutional codes.
