Change in serum resistin level and its clinical significance in patients with systematic inflammatory response syndrome

Abstract

Objective To investigate the change of serum resistin level in patients of systematic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) with varied severity,and its relationship with infection.Methods Sixty patients were diagnosed as SIRS in the Central People's Hospital of Tengzhou,Shandong Province, China and categorized into three groups,i.e.,mild SIRS,severe SIRS and shock groups.Bacterial culture was performed for all the patients at admission and the patients were divided into two subgroups according to their results of bacterial cultures and symptoms,i.e.,sepsis and non-sepsis subgroups.Another 60 healthy age-matched controls were recruited for comparison.Blood was collected from each of them for measuring serum resistin level.Severity of diseases was estimated according to the acute physiological and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (APACHE-Ⅱ) score.Results Significant difference in serum resisitin level was found between the patients of SIRS with varied severity (mild,severe and shock) and the control group (P0.01),and between the patients of mild SIRS group and those of severe SIRS and shock groups (P0.01).But no significant difference in serum resistin level was found between the patients of severe SIRS group and shock group (P0.05).There was significant difference in APACHE-Ⅱ score among the three groups of patients of SIRS with varied severity by multiple comparison for any two groups (P0.01). The patients with sepsis showed significantly different from those with non-sepsis in serum resistin level (P0.01),but there was no significant difference in APACHE-Ⅱ score between these two subgroups (P0.05),and there was significant difference in serum resistin between control group and both subgroups with or without sepsis (P0.01).Conclusions Serum resistin level could be used as a parameter of severity and prognosis assessment in patients with SIRS,as well as a reference indicator for differentiating those with sepsis from those without sepsis.
