Abstract

Objective: The effects of nimodipine in reducing the volume of hematoma and perilesional edema and in improving the neurological function in patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage have been assessed. Methods: Sixty-four patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage were randomly divided into 2 groups, nimodipine treatment and controls. The volume of hematoma and perilesional edema was measured by CT scan before treatment,at days 7 and 14 after the treatment. In addition,ESS was scored at days 30 and 90 after the hemorrhage. Results: The volume of hematoma and perilesional edema of the patients in the nimodipine-treated group was decreased significantly when compared to that of the control patients, and ESS was significantly improved as well. Conclusion: Nimodipine can reduce the volume of hematoma and perilesional edema and improve neurological deficits when administered in the early phase of cerebral hemorrhage.
