Investigation on the Inheritance and Development of Romances of Tang Dynasty According to Subject Matter of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio

Abstract

Strange Stories from A Chinese Studio written by PU Songling, seems to be a successful inheritance and development of romance of Tang Dynasty. From the subject matter we can find that the former describes marriage and love in heaven or hell while the latter gives emphasis to existing world. Strange Stories from A Chinese Studio absorbs officialdom tales from Tang romance and extends the subject matter to legal cases. The Tang romance mocks at officialdom while Strange Stories from A Chinese Studio attacks imperial examinations. The book, Strange Stories from A Chinese Studio, also uses chivalrous stories in Tang romance as a reference but a necessary filtration and reproduction of it.
