OBSERVATION ON ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECT IN VITRO OF TWO KINDS OF PLANT VOLATILE OIL

Objective To observe the antibacterial effect in vitro of volatile oil from honeysuckle and hawthorn fruit stone in order to provide a scientific basis for practical application.Methods The minimum inhibitory concentration test and minimum bactericidal concentration test of each volatile oil were used.Results The MIC50 and MIC90 values of volatile oil from honeysuckle against Gram-negative bacteria strains were ≥128 μg/ml;the MIC90 was ≥128 μg/ml and the MIC50was 64 μg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus.The MIC50 values of volatile oil from hawthorn fruit stone against all strains were 16-64 μg/ml and the MIC90 values were 64-128 μg/ml.Results of the MBC showed that the volatile oil from hawthorn fruit stone for 32-64 μg/ml could kill Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli exposed for 15 min while the volatile oil from honeysuckle for 64 mg/ml could kill the bacteria above exposed for 60 min.Conclusion The two kinds of tested volatile oil have good germicidal effect in vitro,but the MIC and MBC values are remarkably higher than those of two controlled drugs.
