Analysis on the risk factors related to intracranial infection secondary to traumatic brain injury

Abstract

Objective To discuss the occurrence of intracranial infection after traumatic brain injury and its related risk factors for the improvement of the predictability and clinical treatment. Methods Data of 520 patients with traumatic brain injury who were admitted into our department from Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 308 males and 212 females,with mean age of( 40. 22 ± 8. 46) years. The related risk factors of intracranial infection were analyzed. Results Intracranial infection occurred in 32 cases( 6. 15%). Intracranial infection usually occurred at 4 to 10 days after injury. Single factor analysis showed that cerebrospinal fluid leakage,drainage,repeated craniotomy( ≥ 2 times) were significantly related to the occurrence of intracranial infection. Logistic regression analysis indicated cerebrospinal fluid leakage and drainage as the independent factors for intracranial infection. Conclusion Intracranial infection is a serious complication of traumatic brain injury. Patients with drainage or cerebrospinal fluid leakage are more prone to intracranial infection,to which more attention should be taken so as to obtain a better prognosis.
