The relationship between metaphor and polysemy

Abstract

metaphor is not a linguistic phenomenon or a rhetorical style,but it is a powerful cognitive tool for our conceptualization of abstract categories.According to the physical experience people understand unknown objects by known things.Polysemy in English language is a process from a base meaning to other ones by cognitive tool of human beings.The cognition of metaphor is the key to form polysemy.
