English Phonetics and its Application in Teaching Listening and Speaking Course

Although both College English Syllabus (revised edition) and College English Course Requirement (on trial) require that the college students have a good command of correct pronunciation and intonation, most teachers and students fail to attach reasonable importance to the study of them. This paper looks into the causes of this problem and emphasizes the importance of segmental phonemes training, connected speech training, and the analysis of differences and similarities between English and Chinese phonetics. This paper proves with experimental data the positive role that English phonetics plays in teaching Listening Speaking course.
