Abstract
Objective:To study the curative effect and safeness of topiramate in the monotherapy or concomitant treatment on epilepsy in children. Methods:One hundred patients with epilepsy were enrolled in the study. They were divided into the monotherapy group(48 cases)and the concomitant treatment group(52 cases). In the concomitant group the kinds and dosages of antiepileptics formerly used by the patients remained unchanged in the present study.Topiramate was then used as an additive remedy, beginning with a dose of 0.50~1.00 mg/(kg·d)per os.The dose was increased by 0.50~1.00 mg/(kg·d)every week, aiming at a final dose of 4.00~8.00 mg/(kg·d).When,however,obvious curative effects appeared, the gradual increase in the dosage of the drug was stopped and the dosage on that very day was taken as the maintenance dose thereafter. In the monotherapy group, the topiramate was the monotherapy, beginning with a dose of 1.5 mg/(kg·d)per os.The dose was increased by 0.50~1.00 mg/(kg·d)every week, aiming at a final dose of 8.00 mg/(kg·d).Results:The efficiency of monotherapy group was 87.50%,compared with that of the concomitant therapy group,71.15%,showing good curative effects and less, unimportant side-effects.Conclusions:Topiramate in monotherapy and concomitant therapy for seizure is effective and relatively safe with less side-effects.
