Abstract

Objective To study the characteristics of carotid morphology in patients with diabetes. Methods Ninety-eight diabetes patients and 50 normal persons were examined with Doppler ultrasonography for carotid and blood test.Carotid morphology and blood test results of different groups were compared. Results The intima-media thickness(IMT) of common carotid artery (CCA),the Crouse integration, the plaque presence ratio, insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR), c-reaction protein(hs-CRP) and RI of CCA all increased with the course of disease(P0.01).The body mass index(BMI),HOMA-IR and disease duration were independent risk factors of IMT(P0.05).Conclusions Carotid ultrasonography can well reveal the extent of artery atherosclerosis in diabetes patients and is helpful to form treatment protocols and to monitor the therapeutic effects.
