On Liang Qi-chao’s Views of Japan

Liang Qi chao's thought and view of life consist of traditional Chinese culture, Western sense of values, and influence from Japan. He hammered out the reform theory in accordance with the Meiji Restoration as a model at the Reform Movement in late Ch'ing China. After defected to Japan, he absorbed European and American modern thoughts systematically through reading Japanese books, and began original enlightenment activities. However, he noticed the defect of the political organization of modern Japan based on Meiji Constitution, and came to make the constitutional monarchy of Britain as an ideal. After the Republic of China was established, Liang Qi chao was disappointed at the aggressive policy of Japan against China, and repeated criticizing the way of Japanese modernization.
