Abstract
Objective To evaluate the significance of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) in treating acute respiratory failure caused by various causes. Methods Forty-three cases with acute respiratory failure were divided into two groups,NIPPV group (30 cases) and NIPPV-IPPV(invasive positive pressure ventilation)group (13 cases). To compare the differences between PaO_2 before NIPPV and after NIPPV in NIPPV group; between PaCO_2 before NIPPV and after NIPPV in 14 COPD patients; and between APACHEⅡscore in NIPPV group and NIPPV-IPPV group; between APACHEⅡscore in the weaned from NIPPV patients and the unweaned in NIPPV group. Results There were significant differences in PaO_2 before and after NIPPV.There was significant difference in PaCO_2 before and after NIPPV in 14 COPD patients. There were significant differences in APACHEⅡscore between the weaned from NIPPV patients and the unweaned in NIPPV group and between the two groups. Conclusions NIPPV is a safe and effective method in treating acute respiratory failure caused by various causes.
