Significance of serum C-reactive protein level in brain injury patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome

Abstract

Objective To explore the clinical value of serum C-reactive protein(CRP) level in the brain injury patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome(SIRS).Methods 55 patients with brain injury were enrolled in the study.27 patients with SIRS,who were devided into two groups,in-progress group(n=10) and un-progress group(n=17),the other 28 patients were not suffered from SIRS(non-SIRS group).Another 30 healthy volunteers were selected as normal group.The CRP level was detected within 24 hours,4 days and 7 days after injury respectively.Results The CRP level within 24 hours after injury in SIRS and non-SIRS group were both higher than those in normal group(P0.01),though there was no significant difference between SIRS and non-SIRS group(P0.05).There was no significant difference in CRP level of non-SIRS group between the point of within 24 hours and 4 or 7 days after injury(P0.05),but the level of CRP at 4 and 7 days after injury in SIRS group were much higher than the point of within 24 hours(P0.05).Otherwise,they were both higher than the CRP level of non-SIRS group(P0.05) correspondingly.What's more,in SIRS in-progress group,the level of serum CRP was continously ascended,while in non-progress group was descended(P0.05).Conclusion The detection of CRP is helpful in evaluating the possibility of occuring and developing SIRS and the severity of SIRS in brain injury patients.
