ASEAN and the Regional Cooperation in East Asia

Abstract

The rising East Asian cooperation has made and is still making great progress. This paper aims to analyze the role of ASEAN in the progress of East Asian cooperation. Section I introduces the background and development of East Asian cooperation. Section Ⅱdiscusses the Southeast Asian regionalism under the leadership of ASEAN and points out that the ASEAN accomplished a sub-regional cooperation and contributed to the whole East Asian cooperation. Section Ⅲ analyzes the process and motivation of ASEAN's moving and leading East Asian cooperation during the post-Cold War era especially after the Southeast Asian Financial Crisis in 1997.
