Abstract
Objective To study nitric oxide (NO) donor's--sodium nitroprusside (SNP) effect in erection. Methods All 42 impotence patients were given 300μg SNP by ICI, and papaverine (30mg)/phentolamine (ling) were used as control. Results After ICI, 1. The length and circumference of the penis changed markedly, and there was no statistic difference changes between SNP group and control group; 2. Using Virag method to evaluate hardness of the penis, 25 patients in SNP group and 28 patients in control group got points above 100; 3. Though the duration of erection in control group was longer than in SNP group, there was priapism in control group but not in SNP group; 4. There were no apparent changes of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure before and after ICI in both groups as well as side effects of palpitation, stuffiness and dizziness, etc. In control group, some patients had local pain, but none in SNP group. Conclusion The results indicate that SNP as one of NO donors can facilitate relaxtion of the smooth muscle, blood inflow and erection of the penis without obvious side effects. It is considered the drug for erectile dysfunction.
