Transference of the "Beauty of the Sound" in Poetry Translation:Taking Xu Yuanchong's French Translation of the Poetry of the Tang Dynasty as an Example

The principles of Three Beauties put forward by Xu Yuanchong attach much emphasis to the transference of the beauty of the sound and thus have remained in controversy for a long time.This article takes Xu Yuanchong's French translation of the poetry of the Tang Dynasty as the focus of study,attempting to analyze the real meaning of the beauty of the sound,and,based on such analysis,to further explore the transference of the beauty of the sound in the translation of Chinese poetry into foreign languages.The analysis is conducted in three aspects:(1)whether the beauty of the sound should be transferred;(2)whether the beauty of the sound could be transferred;and(3)how to transfer the beauty of the sound.Through analysis,the authors propose that it is most desirable for the translator to transfer the beauty of the sound,while ensuring the achievement of the communicative purpose and taking into account the literary norms of both the source language and the target language.
