Study on HIV/AIDS related behaviors among street-based FSWs and their male clients in a city of Sichuan province

Objective To study social demographic characteristics,HIV/AIDS related behaviors and influential factors of street-based female sex workers(FSWs) and their male clients.Methods In the working sites of street-based FSWs,peer educators were selected as volunteers to help to identify male clients,while the investigators took initiative to approach FSWs and their clients to make investigation anonymously.The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0.Results Aver age age of male clients was 38.03 years,the frequency of street-based commercial sex trades was 16 cases per year,and the rate of condom use per sex in the last one year was 14%,which was positively correlated with the score of HIV/AIDS knowledge(OR=2.25);36% of male clients used condoms in their last commercial sex trades,which was positively correlated with age(OR=1.45) and the score of HIV/AIDS knowledge(OR=4.54).Average age of street-based FSWs was 35.03 years,and the proportion of IDU among them was comparatively high(37.21%),they served 14.07 male clients per week averagely,and most of their clients were construction workers,old folks and farmers.Conclusion Frequency of street-based commercial sex trades is high,and the condom use rate is low,Thus,relevant interventions should be taken actively for streetbased FSWs and their male clients.
