Community-based survey of HIV/STD related risk behaviors among clients of FSWs in Kaiyuan City

Objective To understand socio-demographic features of clients of female sex workers(FSWs),their HIV/STD related risk behaviors and STD associated factors.Method Clients of FSWs were accessed and recruited by outreach staff in entertainment venues,and surveys with anonymous questionnaires were conducted accordingly.Results Of the surveyed clients,42% were married or cohabited,57% had unprotected sex with FSWs in the recent 12 months,and 41% did not use condoms in their latest sex with FSWs;17% developed STD symptoms in the recent 12 months.The STI associated factors among them included less than 6 years of schooling,frequent sex trades with street-based FSWs,not using or occasionally using condoms in sex with FSWs in the recent 12 months and not using condoms in their last sex with FSWs.Conclusion The rate of condom use was low and the prevalence of STD was high among clients of FSWs.Integrated interventions should be provided for both FSWs and their clients especially for clients with less schooling.
