Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and the effects of topiramate on congnitive function in children with epilepsy. Methods: 18 children with epilepsy received topiramate as therapy, topiramate was administered in two equal daily doses of 0.5 mg/kg,and was increased to the target dose of 5 mg/kg daily. The efficacy and the cognitive impairment were evaluated. Results: All cases were followed up for six months,8 cases(44.4%) were found to be effective, and 5 children(27.8%) were seizure-free,5 cases(27.8%) had no respond to the treatment, the total efficacy rate was 72.2%.The IQ decreased after one-month treatment and could recovery to pretherapy-level after six-month treatment. Conclusion: Topiramate is effective in the treatment of children with epilepsy, and has no harm to cognitive function in the continuous treatment.
