Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the effect and safety of topiramate. METHODS: Thirty one children (M 21, F 10; age 6 a± s 4 a) with epilepsy were treated with topiramate. The onset dosage of topiramate (Topamax) was 1-2 mg·kg -1 ·d -1 , po , qd, and the objective dosage was 4-10 mg·kg -1 ·d -1 , bid. The follow up period was 3-8 mo. RESULTS: The total effective rate of topiramate was 69 % and its adverse reaction was minor in the treatment of children with epilepsy. The total effective rate of monotherapy of topiramate showed no significant difference as compared with adjunctive therapy ( P 0.05). CONCLUSION: The topiramate is effective in monotherapy and adjunctive therapy, and well tolerated for epilepsy in children.
