Classification and utilization of native ornamental plants from Hunan by their foliage features

After studying native ornamental plants from Hunan,a new classification system based on their foliage characteristics had been established.They are A) shining leathery leaves(Ilex latifolia as an example);B) polymorphic leaves(Ficus heteromorpha);C) spiny leaves(Ilex cornuta);D) cute leaves(Syzygium buxifolium);E) variegated leaves(Aucuba himalaica);F) succulent leaves(Sedum major);G) helwingia leaves(Helwingia chinensis);H) dominant venation leaves(Viburnum rhytidophyllum);I) hairy leaves(Eriobotrya japonica).One hundred and twenty-two selected native ornamental plants from Hunan had been examined and their foliage traits,habit,utilization,and other ornamental features had been discussed.Some of these plants have great ornamental potential,but have not been utilized in our landscape.This study can be a reference for further studies and utilization of native plants with great ornamental potential in Hunan and adjacent regions.
