A Study on the Associative Meaning and Its Embodiment in the Color Words of English and Chinese

Abstract

Closely related to people's life experience,the associative meanings of a language often directly or indirectly reflect a language group's culture values,produce communicative value and add specific feelings to the words.The basic color words in English and Chinese with similar conceptual meanings have different associative meanings due to their respective specific history and culture.A comparative analysis of the associative meanings of such color words' helps to enhance the understanding of the language itself and improve language learners' intercultural communicative competence.
