The effect of three dimensional conformal radiotherapy in elderly patients with non small cell lung cancer

Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the effect of three dimensional conformal radiotherapy(3DCRT)for elderly patients with non small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods:Fifty old patients of phase Ⅰ-Ⅲ NSCLC were randomized into two groups,25 patients received 3DCRT(3DCRT group),25 patients received radiotherapy(control group).Results:The 1,2 and 3-year survival rates in 3DCRT group and control group were 80%,48%,24% and 64%,36%,16%(P0.05).Acute radiation pneumonitis occurred in 8.0% and 32.0%(P0.05);radiation pulmonary fibrosis occurred in12.0% and 36.0%(P0.05).Conclusion:3DCRT is a safe and effective treatment for elderly patients with inoperable NSCLC and has a high survival rate.
