Abstract
Forest ecosystems have been recognized as both a source and a sink of atmospheric carbon and play an important role in carbon balance at global scale. The study of forest biomass and productivity has been facilitated because they are the basic data for the study of carbon storage in forest ecosystems. The paper reviews the research achievements in the ecophysiological basis of forest production, biomass of different forest types, regional pattern of forest biomass, impact of forest management on forest productivity, research method of forest production and modeling. The research tendency of forest biomass and productivity will focus on issues concerning environment and resources for sustainable management at different scales using advance approaches such as portable photosynthetic measure system, remote sense and geographic information system. The network for long term located research is very important for data sharing and standardization.
