Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of side-to-side nerve anastomosis in repairing peripheral nerve injury. Methods After end-to-end neurorrhaphy or nerve allograft for repairing the peripheral nerve injury, the injured nerve trunk was kept abreast of neighboring donor nerve at suitable segment, the opposite epineurium and fascicle of the two nerves were cut open 1-2 cm until nerve fiber was seen. The two segments were closed together tightly and side-to-side anastomosis was performed with 9/0-11/0 threads. Results All the 9 patients were followed up for 11 months to 4 years with an average of 27 months. The function of injuried nerve in the main control area recovered to M3-4S3-4 in all 9 cases. All the patients were satisfied with the efficacy. Conclusion Side-to-side anastomosis of peripheral nerve is an effective measure complementary to traditional method for repairing peripheral nerve injury.
