Abstract

By the application of fractal method,this paper measures the fractal information dimension of organization order of tourist city systems in the Yangtze River Delta,in order to examine the supporting role of such systems in tourism.Results indicate that for the whole study area,the organization order pertains relatively typical fractal features,reflecting in following facts,for example,the systems are quite compact in structure and the integrity of various cities in study area is relatively good.These features show a relatively strong supporting role to tourism activities.It is clear that both in the northern or southern sub-systems,Shanghai is playing the role of strong centre or hub for the whole area in tourism development,especially in the southern sub-system.However,under current conditions,Shanghai is still not strong enough to improve the general integrity of tourist cities in the delta region.Therefore,the strengthening of Shanghai′s central function would be one of the important ways in the improvement of such integration.
