Abstract

Antibiotic multidrug resistance has been become a tough problem in clinical practice. The mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and dissemination and transfer of antibiotic resistance genes have raised a concern study in the recent years. The recent results showed integron found among bacteria was able to capture and express alien genes, and it played an important role in the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. The integron encodes a integrase(IntⅠ) responsible for the insertion and excision of gene cassettes at recombination site attⅠ and attC,and also provides the promoter responsible for expression of the cassette-encoded genes. The integrons carrying recombinated cassettes are embedded in transposon or conjugative plasmids, mobilize among bacteria and spread antibiotic resistance. The integron can capture gene cassettes,it plays an important role in multiple antibiotic resistance. The present paper reviewed on the structure and classification of integrons, the categories and expression of cassettes, the relationship between the integron and multidrug resistance.
