Abstract
Objective:To summarize clinical experience of surgical treatment for severe stenosis of carotid artery.Methods:227 carotid endartarectomy(CEA) for 220 patents with carotid artery stenosis were treated from Oct.1998 to March,2010.145 cases are male,75 cases are female.Age ranged from 51-88 years old(average:66.4 years old).Transient ischemic attack(TIA) involved in 128 cases,31 cases had history of cerebral infarction. All cases were diagnosed by selective angiography, more than 70% stenosis was seen in all cases;contralateral carotid artery was also involved in 48 cases;96 cases were found coronary artery stenosis by coronary angiography.Combined CEA and coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG) were performed in 25 cases.42 cases were found peripheral artery disease,Simultaneously surgical or endovascular treatment were done for them. Results:clinical symptom significant alleviated in all cases postoperatively,1 patient died of cerebral hemorrhage within 30 days,30-day mortality is 0.45%.1 case had hypoglossal nerve injury,4 cases had the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve injury.Follow-up period was 6-72 months,155 cases were reached during follow-up,follow-up rate was 70.5%.1 case was died of heart attack during follow up period. Conclusion:CEA is an effective and safe treatment for severe stenosis of carotid artery.
