Abstract

In James Joyce's short storyEveline, the heroine at first desires for breaking away from the tedious reality and embracing happiness and freedom in the future, and then gets stuck in the dilemma as whether to elope with her love or stay at home, and in the end gives up to the patriarchal society. In fact Eveline's psychological process coincides with Sigmund Frued's persoanlity structure, with id,ego and superego struggling and conflicting with each other. This paper intends to explore Eveline's growing-up from the emergence of id,and modulation of ego,to the discipline of superego. Thus it may provide a better understanding of the heroine as a complicated and contrdictory woman image.
