Abstract

Objective: To explore the relationship between intelligence and drug abuse, and work out some solutions on the individual cognitive perspective to educate drug abusers to get rid of their drug abusing habit based on the results of intelligent surveys and analysis carried out in drug abusers under drug detoxification. Methods: Questionnaires, psychological surveys, individual or group interviews were used to study the status of intelligence and drug withdrawal of 71 drug abusers under treatment of drug addiction. The correlation of drug abuse, detoxification and their intelligence were analyzed through the statistical data comparison. Results: Compared with the intelligence distribution of the normal people, the average level of intelligence of drug abusers was lower (P0.01), whose intelligent age was equal to that of 14 or 15 year old students, compared with the intelligent developmental level of the high school students in Yunnan province. The average level of intelligence of those who stayed for detoxification longer in detoxification settings was significantly higher than that of those who stayed shorter (P0.01). Conclusion: Drug abusing has some obvious negative effects on individual intelligence. Education and proper management measures can improve individual drug addicts' cognitive ability, which may, to some extent, help him/her to keep away from drugs.
