Abstract
Objective: To determine the effect of triamcinolone acetonide-assisted pars plana vitrectomy. Methods: Triamcinolone acetonide(TA) solution was injected into the vitreous cavity of 31 patients(31 eyes, included 8 idiopathic macular hole patients) during pars plana vitrectomy. The vehicles were replaced by 5 ml balance salt solution(BSS) through 5 μm pore filter combined with three-way cock device.During the surgery,0.5-1.0 ml TA was used to stain the vitreous, hyaloid and internal limiting membrane. After these procedures endolaser photocoagulation,gas-fluid exchange,C_(3)F_(8) gas or silicone tamponade was performed when needed. The follow-up time was at least 4 months. Results: All 31 eyes'(100%) vitreous and hyaloid could be stained by TA clearly and be removed easily.A total of 26 patients'(26/31,83.8%) visual acuity remained stable or increased at least two lines. After surgery, two cases had high intraocular pressure and one case had cataract. No other complications were found. Conclusion: Triamcinolone acetonide could improve the visibility of the hyaloid of the vitreous and the safety of the pars plana vitrectomy.
