Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To study the significance of transcatheter arterial chemotherapy and embolization for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHOD: Eighty-seven patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were randomized into third groups: 1. A group (transcatheter arterial chemotherapy and radiotherapy), 26 cases; 2. B group (radiotherapy and chemotherapy), 29 cases; 3. C group (simple radiotherapy), 32 cases. RESULT: All patients were followed up for 38-72 months. The immediate response (CR) of A group, B group and C group were 92.3% and 72.4% and 68.8%, respectively (P < 0.05). The 3 years survival of A group was 88.5%, higher than those of B group and C group, which were 69.0%, and 62.5% respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Radiotherapy plus transcatheter arterial chemotherapy embolization simultaneously have synergic effect on patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, this method was worthy further study.
