Abstract

Objective To understand the citation pattern of the Chinese Journal of Hand Surgery (CJHS) and analyze the characteristics of literature request of the scientists working in the field. Methods Bibliometrics methods were applied to analyze the references cited in all 642 articles published in CJHS from 2000 to 2004. Results The citation rate of the 642 articles was 78.66%, with 6.19 citations per article. Main types of citations are journals (87.56 %) and books (11.96%). The Price Index was 44.77%. The self-citation rate was 17.20%. The references from the IS highly-ranked journals accounted for 53.36% of all the references. Conclusion Chinese Journal of Hand Surgery is a highly authorized and representative specialized periodical. The citation type is mostly papers from periodicals. The major languages are English and Chinese. The citations are of new contents and good quality, but the amount needs to increase further.
