Abstract

Objective:To compare the clinical effects and complications of regional excision with those of superficial parotidectomy. Method:The clinical data of 84 cases of benign tumor in superficial lobe of parotid gland between September 2006 and September 2012 were analyzed retrospectively.Totally 38 cases underwent regional excision and 64 cases received superficial parotidectomy. All cases were followed up for 2 to 5 years. The recurrence rate and the incidence of facial paralysis,Frey syndrome and salivary fistula were recorded and analyzed. Result:The incidence of surgical complications(facial paralysis,Frey syndrome and salivary fistula) were lower in regional excision group than that in superficial parotidectomy group, but the recurrence rate was not significantly different between the two surgical modalities. Conclusion:Regional excision can be the prime operative method for benign tumor in superficial lobe of parotid gland, and it protects the main function of parotid gland, has lower recurrence rate of tumor and reduces various kinds of complications.
