Xu Fuguan's Comments on the Modern Western Culture

This article analyses the 20th-century Chinese Confucian Xu Fuguan's criticism of the modern western culture,placing his comments within the context of the 20th-century East Asian thought.After the brief introduction,section two summarizes Xu's comments on the modern western culture,which according to Xu is void of humanitarian love and characterized by anti-rationalism.Section three compares Xu's opinion with those of other Chinese and Japanese intellectuals.Section four specifically juxtaposes Xu Fuguan with his close contemporaries Qian Mu and Tang Junyi,whereby going deep into the similarities and differences between the so-called contemporary new Confucians in their attitudes toward the western culture.Section five concludes the whole paper.It is pointed out in the conclusion that,Xu Fuguan on the one hand criticizes the modern western culture by reference of his knowledge of the Chinese tradition,and on the other obtains deeper self-understanding through his criticism.
