Abstract
The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application-layer control protocol for creating, modifying and terminating sessions among two or more parties. With its special design and architecture, SIP becomes one of the most important technologies for Softswitch systems. Besides, 3GPP decides to adopt the SIP stack to realize multimedia session control signaling in IP-based networks. This paper introduces the concept, characteristics and implementation of SIP, followed by the analysis on its importance in multimedia service integration of next generation networks. It also points out some key problems in SIP applications, and proposes an open service integration architecture that combines SIP and its related technologies.
