Abstract
Objective To investigate and analyse the increased intraocular pressure (IOP) on the same day after uneventful phacoemulsification (phaco) of cataract. Methods 200 patients (eyes) of uneventful cataract phacoemulsification were divided into two groups. In group A, 2% methyl cellulose was used; In group B hyaluronic acid was used. The IOP was observed and analysed before operation and 4-8 hours and 24 hours postoperatively. Results The incidence of average increased IOP is 35.56%, 46% in methyl cellulose group and 25% in HA group. It is significantly different statistically (P0.01). The peak of IOP is at 4-8 hours after surgery. Conclusion Elevation of IOP can occur on the same day after uneventful phaco. It is imperative to select high quality viscoelastic materials and to observe closely the change of IOP in the early stage after complicated cases.
