Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes of blood maleic dialdehyde (MDA) concentration and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in rats treated with sulfur mustard, burn or sulfur mustard plus burn. Methods Wistar rats were anesthetized and a 30% burn of total surface of the body was made by exposure of 92 ℃ water for 18. Sulfurmustard was injected. Results Both sulfurmustard injection and burn significantly increased blood MDA concentration, which reached the peak values at 2 h time point and began to recover at the 6 h time point. However, SOD activity decreased by sulfurmustard administration or burn. MDA concentration and SOD activity were further changed in the animals treated by a complex injury of sulfurmustard injection plus burn. Conclusions The results suggest that a complex injury of mustard intoxication plus burn may produce a more severe lipid peroxidation than those induced by mustard treatment or burn only.
