Rhetorical Effects of Linguistic Deviations in Journalistic English

With theme and situation as the basic principle and standard for the use of rhetorical devices, this thesis attempts to analyze the rhetorical effects of linguistic deviation in presenting meaning and transmitting information in the language of news. The analysis of the rhetorical meaning and the potential and aesthetic information contained in deviational uses explores the rhetorical functions of linguistic deviations. The paper further points out that as an effective rhetorical device, linguistic deviation in news serves as an important means in the construction of a language system. Those that conform to the existing norms of the language are likely to make their way into the language itself, constituting a force that promotes language development.
