Abstract
Objective To examine the efficacy of silicone intraocular lens for prevention posterior capsule opacification. Methods Data from 6 relevant studies were retrieved by means of computerized and manual search. The combinability of the studies was assessed in terms of clinical and statistical criteria. Data was extracted on the basis of the intention-to-treat principle. Treatment effect was measured as odds ratio. Pooled estimates were computed according to a random-effects model. Results A total of 639 patients were included in 6 trials. The overall rate of posterior capsule opacification were 11.5% of silicone intraocular lens group and 26.5% of polymethylmethacrylate intraocular lens group. The pooled odds ratio was 0.37 [ 95 % CT 0.22, 0.63 ]. Conclusion The silicone intraocular lens was associated with less posterior capsule opacification than the polymethylmethacrylate intraocular lens.
