A Talk on Hu Huaishen’s Modern Verse Studies

Compared with verse studies of his contemporaries, Hu Huaishen’s study of modern verse is more systematic and more comprehensive, for his views on the reciprocal change between modern minor verse and traditional Chinese verse as well as their respective origin has exerted an extensive impact in the old and new literary camps and has thus led to much controversy. Nowadays, with the fade-out of the milieu for the May 4th revolutionary literature, readers are apt to discern the unique value of Hu’s studies on modern minor verse when they attempt to shake off the shackle of the thought on binary opposites.
