Abstract
The uprising of 1907 in Anhui and Zhejiang shocked the whole country.Various newspapers in Shanghai reported the event on the trail,violently attacking local governments and the magistrates involved and insisting that as it was impossible for a lady to join the revolutionary ranks so the arrest and trial of Qiu Jin was unjust and she was innocent-quite in contrast to the highly appraisement of Qiu Jin as“an outstanding woman revolutionary”and“a notable-minded fighter against the Qing Dynasty”nowadays.All this fully reflected that the Qing Dynasty was fast losing its authority-even while it“told the truth”nobody believed it and that the public held a traditional viewpoint on women and their social role.
