Abstract

The basal boundary of the Permian System has been officially ratified by the ICS, with the GSSP at Aidaralash Creek, northern Kazakhstan. It is defined on the first occurrence of the conodont Streptognathodus isolatus Chernykh et al . 1997 slightly below the contract between the ammonoid genozones of Shumardites Vidrioceras below and Svetlanoceras Juresanites above, corresponding approximately to the base of the fusulinacean Sphaeroschwagerina vulgaris S.fusiformis Zone. In China, the Streptognathodus isolatus only has been defined in Carboniferous Permian boundary section of Yangchang, Ziyan of Guizhou Province, and is referred to as the Streptognathodus elongatus S.simplex Zone. The Yangchang section is suitable as a stratotype for Chinese Carboniferous Permian boundary.
