Abstract

Objective To study the clinical value of serum neuron specific enolase(NSE) in small cell lung cancer(SCLC).Methods The levels of NSE were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay in serum of 92 patients with lung cancer and 32 patients with benign lung diseases and 30 normal individuals. Results The levels of NSE in patients with lung cancer were significantly higher than those of the patients in benign lung disease group and healthy control group. The positive result was 59.78%.The average levels of NSE increased significantly in SCLC(P0.05 or P0.01).The average levels of NSE correlated with the progression of clinical stages of SCLC.The level of NSE in patients with small cell lung cancer after therapy was significantly decreased, compared with the levels of NSE in patients before therapy(P0.001 or P0.01).Conclusions NSE may be useful for diagnosis and evaluation of curative effect in SCLC.
