Abstract

Lin Yu-tang highly appreciated the Confucianist idea of humanity and benevolence;meanwhile he had great esteem for the simplicity and freedom of Taoism.Thus he often consciously or unconsciously viewed Confucianism with the eyes of a Taoist and his understanding of Confucianism blended with the heterogeneous Taoist elements.His interpretation of Confucian canons and his treatment of Confucius with a Taoist view freed Confucianism from shackles restricting humanity and made Confucianism more human.
