Abstract

Analyses of SDS-PAGE, RAPD and RFLP for mitochondrial protein and DNA from anthers and seedlings of cytoplasmic male sterile cotton with the cytoplasm of Gossypum harknessii L. were conducted. The results showed that the mitochondrion in the sterile anther was short of a 31 kDa protein and that the cytogenotype of sterile plant was significantly different from that of fertile plant. When five mitochondrial genes were used as probes in the RFLP analysis, one of them, coxⅡ, showed the absence of a 1. 9 kb band when hybridized with the Hind Ⅲ digested DNA from the sterile plant. The relationship between cotton mitochondrial mutation and cytoplasmic male sterility was also discussed in this paper.
