Abstract
The melody issue of Peony Pavilion has been discussed for a long time. In general, Yiyang, Yihuang, Kun and Haiyan tones have more supporters. In fact, according to the analysis of relevant materials and the artistic creation conditions Tang Xianzu had experienced, all these four tones are not suitable to the original version of Tang Xianzu’s Peony Pavilion. Study showed that there was no typical tone for Peony Pavilion in the early stage and Peony Pavilion is a legendary play written by scholar. The existence of these four kinds of tones of Peony Pavilion is the result of adaptation and combination of various realities. It is for this reason that Peony Pavilion can keep on the stage while the melody issue could not be settled.
